Pro-Poor Ethiopian Development Organization (PeDO) handed over vouchers to the Community Care Coalition (CCC) leaders through Assosa town mayor. The vouchers are primarily intended to facilitate the transparent collection of financial and material resources for the operation and implementation of CCCs programmatic interventions. The initiative aims to strengthen resource mobilization efforts and promote accountability, community participation, and local ownership. To ensure the effectiveness of the Resource Mobilization (RM) activities, important guiding principles are followed, including teamwork, value for money, maintaining strong relationships with donors, and effective networking with stakeholders.
Capacity building of the health sector
Two community-wide awareness events were conducted in different public areas of Sherkole Town with the objective of increasing awareness on maternal health care services among more than 10,000 community members. To ensure the successful implementation of the events, facilitators held discussions with the woreda administration, which provided technical support through the organization of a Zumbra band to mobilize the community. The woreda administration also selected one kebele for the awareness campaign. During the events, more than 20 awareness slogans related to family planning, HIV/AIDS, ANC (Antenatal Care), PNC (Postnatal Care), safe delivery, and the prevention of FGM were printed and displayed in public places. The campaign started from Halmo Primary School and covered various public gathering areas including bus stations, market places, military camps, and other crowded locations to reach a wider audience.
Machine Delivery
Five women beneficiaries successfully received a small-scale electrically charged injera baking equipment in the presence of representatives from the Woreda Women and Social Affairs Office. The event marked an important step in improving the livelihoods of vulnerable women through income-generating opportunities supported by the project. Before the intervention, the beneficiaries used to prepare injera only for household consumption in their homes using traditional wood-burning stoves. This method was time-consuming, unhealthy due to smoke exposure, and limited their ability to produce injera in large quantities for the market. Although the women had long years of experience and strong skills in injera preparation, they lacked the necessary resources and support to transform their experience into a sustainable business opportunity. Through the support of the project, the beneficiaries received 100 kilograms of flour and modern injera baking mitad equipment. This assistance enabled them to start preparing injera for commercial purposes in a safer and more efficient manner. They are now supplying injera to hotels, cafés, and individual customers in the local market. The initiative has significantly improved the women’s daily income and strengthened their confidence and economic independence. In addition, the activity created awareness among community members and local government representatives about the importance of supporting women’s economic empowerment and small business development. The beneficiaries expressed their happiness and commitment to expanding their work in the future to improve their living conditions and support their families.
The Celebration of World Elders Day
The Celebration of World Elders Day was conducted in Assosa Town of the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State (BGRS) in 2024 and 2025 in the presence of key regional stakeholders and community representatives. The event aimed to raise awareness and challenge the negative perceptions and discrimination faced by elderly people within the community. The celebration was marked by mass mobilization campaigns, long walks, and panel discussions held at the regional level focusing on the rights, dignity, and inclusion of older persons in society.
Hundreds of community members, elders, representatives of government sector offices, woreda administration officials, and other stakeholders participated actively in the event. The celebrations were organized through the joint collaboration of Pro-Poor Ethiopian Development Organization, Tkiuret Legmuz Hizb Limat Mahiber, and Labor and Social Affairs Office.
To support the celebrations during the project implementation period, more than 2,500 brochures, four six-meter-long banners, 500 T-shirts, billboards, and other awareness creation materials were prepared and distributed to target groups and the wider community. The behavioral change communication materials carried important federal government messages such as “Leave No One Behind, Promote a Society for All” and “Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment.” In addition to the awareness activities, blankets and other essential materials were provided to elderly beneficiaries at the end of each celebration program.
Leadershipa
Relief support for natural and man-made calamities is one of the core humanitarian interventions carried out by PeDO to assist vulnerable communities affected by emergencies and crises.
Over the past two decades, PeDO has actively responded to various disasters including drought, flood, conflict displacement, fire outbreaks, and public health emergencies such as COVID-19. The organization has provided emergency food items, shelter materials, blankets, clothing, hygiene supplies, and psychosocial support to affected households, particularly women, children, elders, and people with disabilities.
Awareness
On September 21,we celebrate World Disability . The celebration was conducted successfully in 2025 and 26 at regional level in Assosa town of Benshngul Gumuz Regional state , in collaboration with regional administrations, social and labor affairs offices, community-based organizations, and other key stakeholders . The event was organized to raise public awareness and reduce negative perceptions and discrimination against persons with disabilities through mass mobilization, panel discussions, and
community participation. Hundress of community members, government representatives, , and persons with disabilities attended the celebrations held in assosa at regional level. Different awareness creation materials including brochures, banners, and T-shirts carrying key messages were distributed to the participants and the wider community. Bill board was also erected in central place carrying the motor of
the year.In addition to the celebration activities, PeDO had been able to provide 5 individuals with wheelchairs in which one of them is a child, nine individuals with one or two side adjustable crunches and one individual with eye glass. to improve their living conditions and demonstrate to the community and them selves that they can walk ,work and lead a self reliable life .
