Our journy from vision to impact
- June 2003
An indigenous NGO called Pro Poor Ethiopian Development Organization (PEDO) was founded in June 2003. It was reregistered with number 0678 as an Ethiopian Resident Charity Organization in October 2009 in accordance with the new CSO law. PEDO envisions a better society where living conditions of poor and vulnerable groups improved through the realization of the sustainable development goals (SDG) and sustainable development of the country.
For the last two decades, PeDO has made a significant contribution to poverty reduction, peace building, and humanitarian support in Ethiopia through integrated community-based development interventions. The organization has supported vulnerable children, women, youth, elders, and conflict-affected communities by promoting livelihood opportunities, economic empowerment, education, health services, and psychosocial support programs.
PeDO has also played an important role in strengthening peaceful coexistence, social harmony, and community participation through peace building dialogues, awareness creation campaigns, and youth engagement activities. In times of emergencies such as conflict, displacement, drought, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization provided emergency relief assistance including food items, shelter materials, blankets, hygiene supplies, and other essential humanitarian services to vulnerable households. Through its dedicated efforts and strong partnership with government sectors, community structures, and development partners, PeDO has positively impacted the lives of thousands of disadvantaged people across Ethiopia and contributed towards building resilient, peaceful, and self-reliant communities.
Organizational Profile
The Journey of Pro poor Ethiopian Development Organization (PeDO) from the inception,2003 to date For more than two decades, Propoor Ethiopian Development Organization (PeDO) has been working alongside vulnerable communities across Ethiopia to create lasting change and improve the quality of life of disadvantaged populations. Guided by its vision of a poverty-free, peaceful, healthy, and empowered society, PeDO has remained committed to addressing the root causes of poverty, inequality, and social exclusion through integrated community development interventions. PeDO believes that sustainable development can only be achieved when communities are empowered to identify their own challenges and actively participate in finding solutions. This belief has shaped the organization’s six core program areas: Education, Health, Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Support, Livelihood Promotion, Community-Based Structures Support, and Peacebuilding and Democracy.
Through its Education Program, PeDO has expanded access to learning opportunities for children and youth by supporting schools, providing educational materials, and promoting community participation in education. The Health Program has contributed to improved community well-being through awareness creation, prevention initiatives, and support for vulnerable groups. Special attention has been given to OVC support, ensuring that orphaned and vulnerable children receive care, protection, education, and psychosocial support to help them realize their full potential.
PeDO’s Livelihood Promotion Program has strengthened the economic resilience of poor households by creating income-generating opportunities, supporting vocational skills development, and promoting self-reliance. Recognizing the importance of local ownership, the organization has invested heavily in strengthening community-based structures, including youth groups, women’s associations, elders’ groups, and organizations of persons with disabilities. These efforts have enhanced local capacity, improved resource mobilization, and ensured the sustainability of development initiatives. In addition, PeDO has actively promoted peacebuilding and democratic values by fostering dialogue, social cohesion, conflict prevention, and community participation in local governance processes. These interventions have contributed to building peaceful and inclusive communities capable of overcoming social and economic challenges.
The impact of PeDO’s work is reflected in improved livelihoods, increased access to essential services, strengthened community institutions, empowered women and youth, enhanced social cohesion, and greater resilience among vulnerable populations. As the organization looks to the future, it remains dedicated to transforming lives, empowering communities, and contributing to Ethiopia’s sustainable development through partnership, innovation, and community-driven solutions.

The Board of Directors (BoD), accountable to the GA, meets quarterly to oversee policy implementation and guide the organization according to its bylaws The day-to-day operations are managed by the Executive Director, supported by key units including Program Management, Administration and Finance, and Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Communication. These units are responsible for project design and implementation, financial and administrative management, project monitoring, evaluation, and organizational communication.
